"Pain management clinic"

About: Northern General Hospital

Having attended the pain clinic in significant pain, with several fractures to my spine through osteoporosis I am extremely dissatisfied and upset.

The Doctor straight away stated I didn't appear to be in as much pain as I should be from my GPs letter..

This doctor seemed to be insinuating I was addicted to morphine and was trying to con Doctors into giving me more. They didn't want to listen to the fact that one of the main reasons I was at this clinic was that I didn't want to be on the high level of morphine my GPs prescribed.

The physical examination was unnecessarily rough again seemingly insinuating that I was lying about the level of my pain. I was left with several red marks down my back which my husband saw when we got back to our car. I am very concerned why a Doctor would feel the need to use such physical harshness in an examination.

The Doctor would not listen to anything of my medical history. It just seemed they had made their mind up as soon as they met me in the waiting room. They talked over me so a lot of what I wanted to say was never said.

I have been left with no hope of getting any pain relief from this clinic. No review or adjustment of the medication I am currently on. Just told I shouldn't be on such a high dose. I was given a place on a pain management course but with the impression that it was to fob me off.

I feel confused, angry and humiliated from this experience.

I would not recommend this service to anyone and would urge anyone attending to take a chaperone in to see this Doctor.

I was very concerned to hear about your experience and certainly this is not what we would want for our patients. Your account has raised a number of serious issues that we as a Trust would wish to investigate.

Please would you be able to provide more details to our Patient Services Team in order that we can look into your case? The team can be contacted on telephone number 0114 271 2400 or by emailing pst@sth.nhs.uk

Kind regards
