"Left with C. Diff."

I was admitted on Oct 5th for 3 days due to a tiny infected splinter in my finger. Was seen eventually and put on an IV drip of Clindamycin then sent home with a further 10 days worth of tablets of same. In hindsight I wish I hadnt. Was in either ward 17 or 18, cant recall. Whilst there I saw no one clean any surfaces or floors or anything. The bathroom/open toilet/shower room was stuffy, steamy and I should think very condusive to bacteria. Looking back now the IV poles one had to hold to move about with werent cleaned, the remotes for the telly and the bed were visibly very grimy , bed tv and phone not even wiped in a ward that seemed rife with loose bowels and vomit. Not everyone washes their hands I gather. I was given a pair of new and sealed headphones. ironically! The nursing staff were very clean though. I was aware of MRSA but not the ferocity of C. Diff, I was perfectly healthy in that department whilst there. I was asked on leaving if I had any diarreahh, which I hadnt. A few days later though it hit me. I wasnt expecting to pick up something in hospital that has made me so much worse. Of course I then looked online and found out that Clindamycin is the worst antibiotic to be given for causing this as it wipes out all your good gut flora and if c. diff bacteria is around it takes hold. Also not suitable for over 60s and I am 65. Obviously this is where I picked it up and am now nearly 3 months later still on expensive meds to try and clear it up.This being so well known really much more care should be taken over the cleaning, the spores can hang about for at least 4 months. I hardly slept while there because of noise, staff laughing and talking loudly, people wandering about, lights on and off all night long, but put up with it. So anyone else reading this, if you are on antibiotics do try not to touch anything, dont bother with any hand controls, maybe supply your own disposable latex gloves,take care when brushing your teeth in the sinks etc.Try not to put anything down on surfaces or touch your mouth after handling anything. Wouldnt wish c. diff. on my worst enemy, its a horrible experience. Much more warning should be given. Good points are, beds are changed frequently and thoroughly and the food was outstanding and good choice I thought.
