"Lack of understanding"

About: Greater Manchester

(as the patient),

One of the resident doctors at this surgery is very unhelpful and has a lack of empathy or responsibility for patients. My partner took the courage to see a certain doctor about depression and let me assure you this took a lot for him and he was basically given no empathy and left with the same problem. I also saw the same doctor and their attitude is if your not dying or it is not a medical emergency go away never mind how you feel personally about something. Totally appalled with this doctors attitude towards patients, I for one will not be seeing them again and will request this.

Thanks for your feedback. I'm sorry you've not had the support you wanted from your surgery.

At Healthwatch Tameside we are an independent 'consumer champion' for health and care and we work with GP surgeries across the Tameside area. We don't provide any health or care services - our role is to help people to get the most out of those services and to support people if things go wrong.

We have limited staffing in our offices over Christmas and the New Year but we will be back to our full service on Monday 4 January. I think there are three things we can potentially help you with:

1. I am worried about your partner if he is not receiving support and treatment for his depression. There are some mental health services people can access without needing a GP referral. You may find http://www.togmind.org/getting-help/ and https://www.penninecare.nhs.uk/your-services/mental-health-services/ helpful. Alternatively if you e-mail our office (info@healthwatchtameside.co.uk) someone will respond when we're fully staffed next week.

2. If you let us know which surgery it is that you are unhappy with and give us a few more details we can make sure this is included in the report into local GP services which we will be publishing in February. NHS partners have already given us a commitment that they will use our report to help to improve services. Again the best way for you to tell us this is by e-mail to info@healthwatchtameside.co.uk mentioning that you have already posted on Patient Opinion.

3. If you want to change your GP there is information about how you can do this here: http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1088.aspx?CategoryID=68&SubCategoryID=158

Many thanks for your post here - I hope you are able to find a doctor and surgery you're happy with soon.

Peter
