"some of the nurses were very caring, ..."

About: Royal United Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

some of the nurses were very caring, friendly and helpful

What could be improved

I was taken into the hospital on a stretcher and in a neck brace after suffering from a car accident. A doctor gave me a quick visual check over, removed the neck brace and said I was okay to leave. I asked for an x-ray but he told me it is normal procedure not to x-ray young women.

On leaving I noticed blood in my urine and told a nurse and they told me I would need a MRI Scan. I waited a day for an MRI scan which revealed I had fractured my vertebrae and I a bone fragment in my spinal canal and any slight movement could paralyse me.

From that point I was made to lay down in bed for fear the bone fragment would move. I had to wait 4 days in lying on my back before the hospital could supply a back brace which would mean I could get up to move around. The hospital could not supply any entertainment such as a TV and the next youngest patient on the ward was over 70 years old.

The only nurses that provided any level of care were two nurses on placement who were both excellent. The other staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. I only saw a doctor twice in my weeks stay – once at the start and once at the end.
