"Painful Hysteroscopy"

About: Barnet Hospital

(as the patient),

The outpatients hysteroscopy procedure for post menapausal bleeding with biopsies was extremely painful I almost passed out, I remember the consultant saying "are you still with us? " The cramping post procedure was extremely painful and reduced me too tears.

Prior to the procedure I and other women had to comfort a patient who had a hystoscopy and was so distressed as the procedure was extremely painful. She would have to return so that the procedure could be carried out under a GA. The next patient came out and said "I hope you didn't hear me scream" and "if 7 is the worst pain it won't get worse"

I wasn't too nervous still about the procedure as I thought everyone's pain threshold is different and having had 2 natural births I figured my pain threshold is high. How wrong was I.

I would not agree to this procedure again without anaesthetic.

Hi Deesusanne

I'm sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your experience and found the procedure painful. If you would like to talk to someone about this further, please contact our patient advice and liaison service on bcfpals@nhs.net and they will do what they can to help you.

Many thanks

Update posted by Deesusanne (the patient)

I do not need to "talk" to someone about my experience. But I do believe this is not an experience I wish other women to go through with anaesthetic. I believe this is a intolerable procedure and that women should be given more information prior to it. Your leaflet explained most women tolerate it and that the cramps felt were similar to period pains. They were nothing like period pains I ever had. I was not alone in my painful experience as my story tells and since have joined a group with the help of Lynn Brown MP to try and make changes to this procedure.

Hi Deesusanne

I'm sorry that you found my answer unhelpful.

We take all feedback from patients seriously and I suggested that you contact PALS as that way we can find out more about your experience, such as when you attended, in order for us to be able to give accurate feedback to the department. We do not ask for those details on Patient Opinion as it is a public forum and would be a potential breach of your confidentiality.

I notice that in your second comment you mention a leaflet you were given. It would be useful to have the name of the leaflet so that we can pass on your comments that it does not reflect the experience of the procedure and suggest that we make changes to the information we provide.

If you would prefer not to contact PALS, please feel free to email me on rf.communications@nhs.net with this information so that I can pass it on to the right people.

Kind regards

Rachel
