"Shortage of senior staff"

About: North Tyneside General Hospital

The main problem on ward 2 is a shortage of senior staff.

My father has been a patient on this ward for several weeks and on Friday night became ill.

He had been put to bed for the night and when we arrived for visiting it was obvious things weren't right.

He had suffered a mini stroke and if we had not arrived and spotted something was wrong he would have lain undetected.

It would appear that it had taken three junior staff to put him to bed.

They felt something was wrong but there were no obvious signs.

It was not until we arrived 10 minutes later that he had apparently suffered a stroke.

There was only one senior member of staff on duty and it does not seem enough to care for 25 patients on a busy elderly care ward.

This is not a complaint against the staff.

Everything was then done for him and he was transferred to cramlington emergency care unit for further treatment.

I feel that had more senior staff been on duty this may have been spotted earlier and overall would have provided a better level of service.

Dear Sheila

Firstly my apologies it has taken a while to respond to you.

Thank you for your feedback, it’s very important to us so that we can improve where we need to. Thank you also for letting us know the ward your father was cared for on. This is useful and allows us to look at staffing and patient numbers. Pleased be assured we will do this.

I do hope that your father is well and making a good recovery.

Best wishes

Claire Riley, director of communications and corporate affairs
