"Labour ward"

About: Birmingham Women's Hospital / Maternity care

I am very unhappy with the service of labour ward. I have tried to contact them as I have concerns about my pregnancy and my midwife had advised me to call them. I have attempted to call over 5 times and I had no answer from anyone. I called the triage to see if they can help and they told me to keep calling the labour ward. On my notes it says that labour ward is for urgent care 24 hours a day. Yet no one answered the phone. I am very unhappy with this matter

Thank you for taking time to feedback to us.

I am very sorry to hear that you had difficulties getting through to the labour ward. We try to make ourselves as available as possible to the public. There are two numbers that relate to Delivery Suite that we give you during your pregnancy. One is for Triage and one for the Reception Desk, which would direct you to Triage if you needed to speak to a midwife. There are always two midwives in Triage, but sometimes they are busy providing care to women.

This may be why they could not answer the phone. There are also mostly two receptionists at the desk, but sometimes they get called away to find women’s notes or other errands. It is unclear why the midwife you spoke to was unable to help you without knowing more about your concerns. In the future, we are planning a telephone triage service which will be manned constantly.

We would welcome your feedback as that service develops. If you still have concerns I am happy to help and arrange for someone to discuss further.
