"Staff lacking the kindness & honesty usually..."

About: St James's University Hospital

A tale of two halves - took my husband (76, multiple co-morbidities, currently very frail post-accident and probable over-medication at another hospital) to an outpatient appointment two weeks ago. The help given to us by the general public whilst on public transport (including rush hour) was overwhelming; fellow travellers practically carried him off the train. He was admitted to St James ward 27 on Thursday, discharged Friday. There are a number of disturbing issues around this admission that are going through the appropriate channels (and yes, they will get there eventually) but the most disturbing one was the lack of common kindness amongst the staff. I had a long drive home after leaving him, he didn't have his phone with him & since I was phoning the ward anyway re ongoing medication issues (they seemed to fail to understand re very labile INR ), I asked a staff nurse who took the call to pass the message to him that I'd got home safely. They said they would, they didn't . The nurse who phoned me in the morning confirmed my husband had had the scan we thought he'd been admitted for; he hadn't. He struggled with sleep because of cold, to which he is at the moment very susceptible. He asked a nurse for an extra blanket, they said they would but the blanket failed to materialise. Honestly, can the NHS really fail to provide something as simple as blanket for a frail old man? It's not rocket science. This service isn't free; we pay for it through our taxes and NI (and we oldies have paid for longer than most), car park charges etc. We all know the service is under financial pressure, but frankly, a blanket costs comparatively little (especially when compared with the aperients they'd felt obliged to send by Taxi to our home address the previous week) attitude costs nothing. And the staff at Jimmy's really, really need to look at their attitude, because it just comes across as contempt for the patients for whom they are paid to provide care.
