"Horrendous experience in A&E"

About: St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey)

My daughter was referred to A&E by her GP who advised that she required an urgent CT scan following temporary blindness and severe daily headaches. We attended on 2nd December in the evening and were quickly seen by the triage nurse. However, that's where the positive experience ends. We then waited a further four and a half hours, during which time my daughter was not seen by a Dr or nurse, and when she tried to find out what was going in she was told rudely that she would have to wait. She left the department after 5 hours of waiting, having had no medical attention and still requiring a CT scan.

She has returned to her GP today, only to be told that in order to get a CT scan she needs to go to A&E again and wait to be seen in order of priority - for some unknown reason she cannot be referred directly to radiology or neurology. She has decided that she can't face going there again so will not be attending.

Perhaps the Royal Surrey or Frimley Park are more organised - my advice is to consider them before St Peters who are a complete shambles.

We are really sorry and concerned to hear about your daughter’s recent experience in our A&E department. All A&E departments are under considerable pressure during the winter season and we have to prioritise those patients who are in need of emergency help.

Without more details of your daughter’s case it is difficult to comment further on the delay but would encourage you to contact Philip Kemp in our A&E department to discuss this further to get a better understanding of the situation.

He can be contacted on 01932 723023 or email Philip.kemp@asph.nhs.uk
