"Mental health services at the wells road centre, nottingham"

About: Forensic mental health / Low secure services

(as a carer),

As a carer for someone suffering from mental health problems I have been attending the hospital as a visitor for quite some time. During my time visiting the centre I have sadly found that many of the staff members have not treated the patient with respect or indeed affirmed their autonomy. I have personally witnessed staff reading books rather than assisting patients and in some cases winding patients up by being, in my opinion, unnecessarily obtrusive. There also seems to be a distinct lack of communication between the medical team, families and patients. There seems to be an assumption made that carers and relatives already know the mental health systems and processes. When communication is had with staff there is the tendency for them to use a lot of medical jargon instead of using layman's terms. During the last few months I have been visiting there had been no discussions around action planning in terms of how or when the patient will be released, almost giving me no help that they will get out. So much so it is making me wonder if this is a place to get better or a place to fester.

Recreation facilities from what I have witnessed have been poor with some patients wandering around a basket ball pitch sized outdoor area....I'd almost describe it as a pressure cooker type environment, not necessarily condusive to aiding patients in getting better. Whilst I appreciate my feedback is quite negative I would like to point out that there are a select few members of the mental health team who have shown professionalism, respect and dedication to their role and the patients they serve and their families/carers.

Sadly rather than get better the service has, in my opinion, got progressively worse. Having raised issues with staff on numerous occasions I'm now left wondering if I would have better luck with my local cllr, local MP and the minister for mental health?

Is this really the extent that I'm going to have go to in order to get my relative the healthcare & ongoing support they deserve and need?

I really do feel as though there is no plan to release my relative, or indeed move them further forward. instead you have almost reached a stalemate situation. One that could be likened to the 'child - child scenario'.

I think this is absolutely disgraceful. The only consistency has been the inconsistency of care!

Greg, I haven't visited the main reception for a while but when I did it was always frustrating to see just how out of date your patient and relatives information board was.

Dear Korky,

It would be good if you could contact me on the number listed above so we can discuss your frustrations. All patients are cared for under the Care Programme Approach which means that there should be well documented plans for discharge throughout their stay in hospital with regular meetings focused on supporting that patient to move to the community.

It would be useful to discuss where you feel barriers to this process can be overcome.

I will of course update the notice board for families and friends, and I am sorry that the information is out of date.

Yours Sincerely
Gregg Murray

Dear Gregg,

Many thanks for your response.

Instead of ringing you with my concerns, only for you to then pass them on to a relevant person, would it be possible for you just to give me direct contact details of the person I need to speak with? I have left a message for the senior psychiatrist to call me, however, after some 4 days I have yet to receive a call. No call-back and no courtesy call to notify me as to when a call will materialise!

I appreciate your offer to review the notice board, however, I think the fact it is so out of date speaks volumes about the organisation's values in relation to relative, patient and NHS cohesion.

Could you tell me what quality standards the hospital adheres to e.g. IIP & ISO etc?

Dear Korky,

The Consultant for Thurland Ward is Dr Saleem. He can be contacted through Preeya (medical Secretary) 0115 9555 389.

The Independent regulator for health and social care in England is the Care Quality Commission. We adhere to their 'fundamental standards' which you can view on the CQC website: www.cqc.org.uk/content/fundamental-standards.

The reception notice board has been updated. Please be aware that the last full CQC inspection for the Trust and our Directorate was 2014 which gives us our rating. We must continue to display this. Individual wards are inspected more frequently.

If you do need any further help or have any questions please let me know.

Yours Sincerely

Gregg Murray
