"A truly outstanding Doctor"

About: NHS Fife Queen Margaret Hospital / Dermatology

(as the patient),

For nearly 3 years now I have been suffering with an ongoing skin complaint. I have absolutely no complaints regarding the care or attention that I have received from many medical professionals within NHS Fife and I'm quite sure that in time my skin complaint will be resolved with all the assistance that I am being given.

I wish to pass on my gratitude to one very special lady however and that is Dr Murray.

As stated I have suffered with my skin for a long time now. I was attending a different medical practice in the NHS Forth Valley area on a weekly basis and being prescribed various creams and ointments but all to no avail. At that time I was managing to cope with my skin and living a normal life however I was becoming concerned that nothing was working for my skin.

I subsequently moved home and came under the care of NHS Fife.

Throughout 2014 I struggled on with my skin however it was beginning to have a major impact on my day to day life.

I truly believe that unless a person has suffered with a skin condition ( I have since been diagnosed as suffering atopic eczema) no one truly understands the utter devastation it causes.

I was suffering sleep deprivation perhaps only achieving 2 hours sleep a night due to the constant itching and scratching. My skin was painful and inflamed and looked an awful mess. Suffice to say I was truly miserable and at my lowest.

I made an appointment to see a Dr at Linburn Road in December 2014. What a turning point that day was for me!

I was greeted by a friendly smiling Dr Murray. I explained how I was feeling and the symptoms I was suffering. She looked at my skin and was aghast. Straight away, whilst I sat in her office, Dr Murray contacted the Dermatology Dept at Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline.

Dr Murray spoke to several persons within the ward and explained she had a poorly patient with her and wished me to be seen that day within the ward. Dr Murray did get me an urgent referral for that day and I was seen by the consultant. I truly believe had Dr Murray not taken the bull by the horns that day I would not be as far down the road with the excellent care that I have received and still receive from the Dermatology.

Dr Murray fully understood and sympathised with me and could not have done any more for me and for that I am truly grateful. The lady is an asset to her profession.

Unfortunately Dr Murray left the practice to take up and appointment elsewhere.

Within the last 2-3 weeks I had cause to make another appointment at Linburn Road as I had suffered a particularly bad weekend with itching skin and again at my wits end. The reception staff were so helpful and got me an appointment for the same day when I explained my symptoms.

I am currently prescribed anti histamine medication but felt it was having no impact and wondered whether I could be prescribed another medication to take along with my current one.

I booked myself in for my appointment and imagine my glee when I saw Dr Murray's. name on the screen! When Dr Murray came down the corridor to call me I nearly knocked her down in the rush to see her! She was smiling and so was I. Again I explained the situation and again the truly marvelous lady that she is made a call to the Dermatology dept and as luck would have it she spoke with my consultant. A plan of action was agreed between Dr Murray and the consultant and a prescription for another drug was issued once advice had been sought.

Again Dr Murray took a keen interest in me and my skin complaint which meant an awful lot.

I left the practice feeling positive that both the medications would work.

However the story continues as I just have terrible skin! ! Onwards and upwards with the exceptional care that I am receiving at the Dermatology.

Dear Fifer45

I won't even begin to pretend to understand how it must be living with a skin condition as you describe. It is however understandable that at times you have felt so low and miserable as a result of the sleep deprivation, constant annoyance and physical appearance and pain - my heart goes out to you. Being listened to and supported is clearly very important in a situation like this and it is great to hear that Dr Murray did just that. Thereafter referring you appropriately has clearly helped and made a big difference to how you feel. I will be delighted to pass your comments on to Dr Murray, to the Reception staff at Linburn and will also share your post with the staff in Dermatology. I am sure this will make their day.

I appreciate this is an ongoing issue for you; however I do hope that you find support when you need it.

Regards

Louise Ewing
