"Emergency Surgery Heartlands Hospital Birmingham"

About: Heartlands Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was referred by my GP to the Surgical Team at Heartlands - with a suspected incarcerated umbilical hernia. The hospital was really busy but I was accessed on ward 11 by a wonderful caring nurse. Within a reasonable time.

I had bloods taken -medical history - blood pressure x-ray and was then seen by a Surgeon Mr Super he explained I would have to have an operation. This would have to be done straight away due to infection. As a woman in her late 60's (and normally fairly healthy) this came as a shock. But Mr Super and his team did everything to reassure me everything would be fine. I felt I was in good hands.

I went to theatre at 2am (busy night) and then returned to ward 12. I could not have been better cared for by all the staff on ward 12. I was seen again by Mr Super who informed me all went well and I could go home at lunch time.

Absolutely fantastic in less than 24 hours into hospital operated on and home again.

Good old NHS and its brilliant staff. THANK YOU ALL. I will never forget you all.

Dear Cally-Con

thank you so much for your lovely post about your experience as a patient in our hospital.

I am so pleased that throughout your journey you felt that you were seen and assessed in an appropriate time. I am sure it came as a huge shock to find that you needed an emergency operation!

I will be delighted to ensure that Mr Super, your consultant, the Ward Manager for Ward 11 Surgical Assessment, and the Ward Manager for Ward 12 are made aware of your very kind comments, as well as the Matron for Surgery, and they will also communicate your feedback to all of the nursing team involved in your care.

I do wish you well in your continued recovery and I hope that my actions are acceptable.

With kind regards

Marie Helebert
