"Being in Glennie House got me ready to go home"

About: Glennie House

(as a service user),

I stayed at Glennie House for three months after I was discharged from hospital as I wasn’t ready to go straight home.

I had to do everything for myself there, this was a big change after hospital where they do everything for you. It was a good thing as it got me ready to go home. In hospital if I needed the toilet in the middle of the night I had to buzz for the nurse who would come and put the bed sides down and help me to go. At Glennie house I didn’t have sides on the bed so I could go to the toilet alone at night. This made me independent.

I wanted to get back to my own home so I was desperate to get out. I like where I live, it’s my own house.

At Glennie House there weren’t people to talk to as everyone else had dementia, it was difficult to get much conversation. One lady came into my room at night thinking she was the matron, she sometimes took things out of my room which I didn’t like. I think being there really helped me but it would be good if there was somewhere you could go that was more sociable.
