The patients lung collapsed and a consultant signed a DNR without discussion with me, the next of kin. I was known to the nursing staff and my contact details were given and were on the patients file.
Does protocol not say that the next of kin (where known) is advised/consulted about a DNR order? Surely a DNR requires the consent of the next of kin?
As soon as I found out about the DNR, I discussed the situation with the medical team and the patient was transferred to the ITU and subsequently made a full recovery.
Since this time, another family has told me that a DNR was signed by a consultant without their consent.
After this experience I now feel very apprehensive about the care at st Georges hospital and wonder whether I would be consulted about the treatment being given to a member of my family.
Treated with respect and dignity means talking to the patient or their next of kin about their care
