"Hb mix up!"

About: Lister Hospital

My father is currently on ward 8a north and I have to say some of the staff seem a bit dippy!

My father came onto the ward with gastrointestinal bleeding. On thursday his haemaglobin had gone down to 78% and he was told he would have 2 units of blood. He had one unit then went down to radiology for a procedure. Thursday night and Friday, although he was pale and out of breath, they didn't give him the rest of the blood, my father asked to see a doctor on Friday evening, only to be told one wasn't available. Come Saturday morning, still no blood given to him and he was told his Hb was 110%! This seemed impossible. Then they took anther blood sample and low and behold it was only 89%. So whose blood was test result had they given to my father? I hear that he will now be given 3 units of blood tonight, and he'd better get them. My mother is phoning him later tonight to make sure he gets it.

We're sorry that things haven't gone quite as well for your father as we would have liked.

We'll be passing on your feedback to our lead nurse for medicine, as we're sure she will want to get this followed up.

But it's unlikely she will get to see your comments until tomorrow or maybe even Monday.

If you have further concerns over the weekend, please ask to speak with one of the duty matrons - part of their role is to sort out problems like this by putting things right.
