"Disabled son left very distressed after an..."

About: Harrogate District Hospital

A huge lack of care for my disabled son who was left distressed following an operation as Woodlands Ward did not act upon two phone calls informing them that he was coming out of sleep. It goes without saying that a parent should be allowed to be with their child as soon as possible when they are about to undergo an alien and upsetting experience.

I was not walked down to recovery until 30-40 minutes after the first call, by which time he was so distressed the recovery team had made the decision themselves to return him to the ward to find his parents. He is still traumatised by the event, often mentioning it.

Unfortunate really as they had made every effort beforehand at the pre-op to help things go as smoothly as possible for my son. I was extremely pleased. Even on the ward both before and after our nurse Claire was fantastic. I don't know what went wrong at that point, but it wasn't acceptable.
