"Paediatric a&e"

About: Lister Hospital

I arrived just after 4pm on a Monday early evening with my 7 month old baby. She had a wheeze and some difficulty in breathing. We were assessed by a lovely nurse who got her seen quickly by a dr who said they could hear a wheeze and some crackles on her lungs. She was given inhalers and we were out in the waiting room to wait an reasses. After being reasses we were told by one member of staff they couldn't hear a wheeze etc the. Another said they could. More waiting, finally after 3 1/2 hrs saw another doctor, who said they couldn't hear anything but as the baby was young would have their senior colleague look at the baby. The senior dr said they could hear a wheeze and crackles all over her lungs and that she would need to be seen by another dr! We then went to have a chest X-ray and finally saw the paediatric dr after 10pm! For them to be shocked we were still waiting. They sent us home with antibiotics and an inhaler after over 6 hours.

In this time the waiting room had gone from full to about 2other people waiting and back to full again with many people being seen and going home before us. Even the nurse who initially assessed us said I can't believe your still here!

It just seems like a lot of miscommunication, i don't feel it was fair on a baby who was obviously having some difficulty, but because they wernt crying etc seemed to be passed over. They are not a crying/whingey baby so doesn't really make a fuss, but also probably just tired of coughing and wheezing.

We're sorry that you weren't overly happy with the care that you and your baby daughter received when attending the Lister's children's emergency department recently.

Whilst there may have been good clinical reasons why she was seen by several doctors, it does seem like things were not always communicated clearly enough.

Would you mind contacting us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so we can ask our senior children's services nurse to contact you to discuss these concerns?

This way, hopefully improvements where identified can be made for the benefit of other patients.

Whatever you decide to to do, we are grateful for the feedback and we hope that your daughter is responding well to her treatment.
