Mental health care in A&E

"Mental health care in A&E"

About: Alexandra Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I have been admitted to A&E numerous times as a result of self inflicted injuries or suicide attempts.

I have experienced a few nurses and members of staff who roll their eyes at "yet another one" after they've already seen numerous mental health cases that night. Those nurses do not bother to speak to me, and actually make me feel incredibly uncomfortable and guilty when already in a very difficult situation, complaining about "babysitting" me...

However, most of the nurses and staff within A&E are amazing. Considering they are not trained in mental health they show a great amount of compassion and empathy. I've had staff sit with me for hours, even when police are there to ensure my safety, and talk to me and try to make me feel better. The level of care and support they show makes a difficult situation that little bit easier which is always a blessing. Couldn't be more grateful to these members of staff.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback to us. I am sorry to hear of your negative experiences, no patient should be made to feel that way. However I am pleased to hear you found most the staff you encountered with in A&E to be compassionate and supportive especially during a difficult time. We are always very grateful for feedback and it is a real boost to our staff to be told that they are providing good quality care.
