"Emergency response"

About: Southmead Hospital

My son was involved in a serious RTA. He was assessed in a special area in A&E. Firstly he received an energency op to remove his ruptured spleen within an hour of admittance. He was taken to the ICU. The next day he had his pelvis, leg and arm repaired. After 3 days on the ICU he was moved to ward 25 where the service remains great. I can only raise one concern, that due to his confusion after banging his head they did put him in a room by himself which led to him having a fall whilst unmonitored. A bad decision but no harm done thankfully and he was moved back to a continuously monitored environment . Despite this hiccup all I can say is thank you to everyone, at every level at Southnead that made any decision or helped my son in any way. I know you will all think it's just your job, but it has all been done so well.

Dear Anonymous – I am grateful to you taking the time to post you views of the hospital services at what must be an extremely busy time for your family.

It is regrettable that the falls assessment did not flag up the risk of your son falling, or that a 4 bedded ward was not available at the time, but I was pleased to see appropriate steps were taken to ensure he did not suffer any further falls.

I was pleased to hear of the good care generally provided to your son and I hope that he continues to improve and makes a full recovery. Your comments will be shared with those involved.

Kind regards – Steve Sykes
