"I found that overall the care ..."

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I found that overall the care was really good and the surgeon excellent. Food and cleanliness was good.

What could be improved

I as given meication without explanation throughout my stay, and found that on discharge that an explanation of the medication was not clear and not shared with my wife whom was paramount in my care at home. This was improtant as I wa still tired from my op etc that I didi not digets any information I was given. During the hospital stay staff obviously because they routinely do the same job do not consider the patients niaviety over stuations such as the physiotherapist saying we will have to test you getting a ath tomorrow which I conjured up images of myself naked and having to try and get in and out of a bath and bathe infront of people. silly to you maybe. During handovers staff stand in the iddle of the ward discussing each patient which could be embarrasing or preferred to keep private by the patient, they also keep asking aout your bowel movements such as passing wind in front of other including visitors which is embarrasing especially when you heve younger people there. Most importantly I very strongly believe that family should be strongly considered and informed as well as considered in intermitely caring fr the patients needs in hospital as it would be less distressing than young staff looking after elder people's personal needs such as bathing etc. Discahrge could be improved as you are waiting around for hours to go home and usually just waiting for medication.

During outpatients appointments it would reduce waiting time if you were aware you needed to go to another department for things such xrays which could be done prior to waiting to see the consultant.

Anything else?

Most importantly involve familyit can be more worrying and distressing for them than the patient, my wife actually had to seek medical help from her GP as it resulted in her not being abe to function at work which required her to take sick leave for the first time in her life.
