"My GP deregistered me"

About: Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear

(as the patient),

I complained about one of the doctors at my surgery to their practice manager, instead of investigating this, I just received a letter removing me from their practice list. I tried to register with a new GP but when they asked me why I left my previous surgery and I told them I was deregistered they refused to accept me. I am now without a doctor and have to rely on walk in centres for medical help.

Hello,

I was sorry to hear you have been de-registered from your GP practice. I have received the following information from NHS England regarding de-registration.

Practices have the ability to remove a patient from their registered list under certain circumstances, as defined in the contract between NHS England and the practice. These include;

where there has been an irrevocable breakdown in the relationship between the patient and the practice (only when the patient has received a warning within the last 12 months that they are at risk of removal); where the patient has exhibited violent or threatening behaviour; a change of address whereby the patient no longer resides within the practice boundary; the patient has been absent from the country for longer than three months, is in Her Majesty’s forces, is serving a prison sentence of more than two years or has died; the patient has registered at an alternative practice.

As walk in centres or urgent care centres are unable to provide the same services as a GP surgery it is important for you to be registered with a practice.

You could approach another practice or contact the local Patient Registration Services at NHS England by calling 01325 553000 and asking for that department. Alternatively you may be able to ask Healthwatch for support.

I hope that is helpful.

Thanks for your response.

I was removed from the practice list for making a complaint, the practice's way of dealing with this was just to deregister me. The GMC have written to this doctor due to his unreasonable behaviour, so hopefully he won't do this to any other patients again.
