"Echocardiogram Experience At New Victoria Hospital Glasgow"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Cardiac rehabilitation

(as the patient),

I have had three of these scans before and on each occasion it has been carried out by Consultants who you could have a conversation about the process but it looks like this has been downgraded ..I have no idea to what as she didn't introduce herself.

I had a bottle of OJ with me and she snappily said I couldn't drink it during the process ( which I had no intention of doing) but she said, almost grudgingly, I could take it in with me.

Initially she said that my GP had asked that a Doctor see me at the clinic and when I asked if it was in the Clinic I was at or the other one that Cardiology uses she said it would be in the one I was at.

She did the scan with hardly a word spoken except asking me to change position or take breaths.

At the end of the procedure she said that if a Doctor was to see me I would get a letter sent out to attend the clinic ...This was not the impression I placed on what she told me earlier and I said so but she said this wasn't what she said and I was only there to get the scan done.

I must say this is in no way typical of staff at this hospital but I think some do need their interpersonal skills sorted out.

I work in a small team in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde which seeks to involve patients and carers in the work of the NHS. The biggest part of my role is in managing feedback projects across the Board area, one of which is Patient Opinion. It is my job to give our patients and carers the opportunity to give us feedback, and to make sure that this is passed to the right people to help us improve the services we provide.

Dear Molley,

Thank you for taking the time to let me know about your recent experience, and I am really sorry to hear that it wasn't up to the same standard as you have had before.

We do have cardiac technicians who have the skills and expertise to carry out this type of scan, however from what you have said I feel that the issue wasn't particularly that you didn't have a consultant carry this out, but rather the manner of the person looking after you.

We would expect all of our patients to be treated politely and with respect by all members of staff, but I know what a difference is made by going that small step further and sharing a kind or friendly word to make the patient feel that bit more comfortable and relaxed. In hospital in particular, which can so often be an anxious environment for people, it is so important.

I will pass on your feedback to this department, to ensure that all staff are mindful of the welcome they give and the impression that leaves. I am glad that this has been a one off experience for you, and that it is not typical of the other staff that have looked after you, and I think it is important to note that point also to the department as the majority of your experiences have been positive ones.

I wish you all the best with any further treatment, and thank you again for getting in touch.

Best Wishes,

Lorna
