"Very Inpressed"

About: Yeovil District Hospital

This week I had a routine operation and Yeovil Hospital and would like to provide some feedback.

Having recently moved to the Yeovil area my pre-op was the first time I visited. I was immediately impressed by the modern design and the cleanliness, plus the facilities. The nurses at the pre-op were wonderful, friendly and empathetic and they really put me at ease. The pre-op centre was easy to access by lift, I have limited mobility and this was such a great help. My appointment was on time and was thorough.

I had the operation on Thursday 8th Oct at the day surgery unit which is perfectly located by the main entrance. Although, having ME and feeling quite poorly anyway, sitting in a waiting room before they were ready to perform the operation was quite tiring, I only had to wait a couple of hours and it was nice and quiet with comfortable chairs.

All of the staff were lovely, especially the anaesthetist who really put me at ease. I was treated as an individual and the nurses were brilliant. Overall it was a very good experience and I would happily recommend the hospital to anyone. The facilities are excellent.

The only thing that I wasn't overly happy with was when I was discharged I was told to take ibuprofen and I told the nurse I didn't have any at home and would get some in the hospital shop to which they agreed.

When I went to the shop and asked for some I was asked by the assistant if I was a patient. I said yes I had just been discharged. They told me they could not sell me any pain medication because it might react with any medication I had already been given. I then told them that I had discussed with the nurse who knew I would be getting some at the shop - but I was told the assistant couldn't sell it to me and I would have to go back to see the nurses.

Having been discharged after a long wait, which i know is routine, I just wanted to go home so we had to take a detour to get some ibuprofen at a pharmacy. Having just had a general anaesthetic I wasn't feeling my best! I just wonder why the medication is for sale in the shop if not for patients.

It is certainly not a complaint, I just feel it would be useful to have a sign up to advise that any patients having just been discharged cannot buy OTC medication from the shop, as this was not made clear by anyone and there were no signs to say so.

Other than that I was really happy with the experience and it is clearly a hospital with a high quality of care and compassion. Very impressed with this hospital!
