"spinal operation"

About: Southmead Hospital

I came to Southmead for spinal surgery on the 7th September 2015. All went to plan, I was taken to theatre early with no waiting around, all staff involved were brilliant notably my anesthetist, who was amazing they noticed I was getting a bit nervous & gave me something to help. In recovery I remember wondering where my mum & auntie were, I found out much later that they was asking to see me but told they wasn't allowed! (They were told I was out of surgery & ok) there was a delay with my room so I was kept in recovery for longer than normal, I was taken to theatre at around 9:30am, I was finally taken to my room at 7:15pm so in all that time my mum didn't see me & was extremely worried & when I found this out I was quite angry! Having a room to yourself is lovely all that was missing was a TV! Having one really would help to pass the time! They only complaint I have about nursing staff is the day after my op I asked a nurse if it was possible to have a seat for the toilet as it was far to low for me, the nurse said they could get one from a patient that wasn't using theirs, the nurse said they would give it a clean & bring it to me, I never received it!! I didn't eat anything whilst I was in hospital (I was in for 3 days) as the menu doesn't really cater for vegetarians! In my experience I found the night staff far more attentive than the day staff, I was in gate 7b bed 63, & I really want to give a special mention to a member of the night staff who was absolutely amazing, they could not do enough for me & nothing was to much trouble for them! The nurse always addressed me as if I was a friend, always had time for a chat & would just pop their head around the door to check if I was ok or needed anything! I looked forward to them starting their shift, they made my hospital stay easier & more bearable, when I have my follow up appointment in a few weeks I will drop a thank you card off for them overall I am happy with my treatment & my stay at Southmead & am so far doing much better that when I had my first operation at my local hospital 3 yrs ago! I just want to add that anyone I seen from the spinal team were brilliant!

Dear Queenie – thank you for taking the time and trouble to post your views on your operation and stay in Southmead Hospital. I was please to learn that overall your experience was positive.

TV’s will be made available in each room and will I am sure assist patients to feel less isolated and help pass the time until they are well enough for discharge.

The hospital prides itself on its range of food options, and can accommodate every dietary need, so I am sorry if you were not made aware of this. At the very least staff can access sandwiches, toast and snacks at any time to ensure even patients who arrive on the wards outside of the regular meal times can be fed – as this is an important part of the recovery process.

I am sorry that the nurse was distracted and did not return with your aid for the toilet, unfortunately nurses are always very busy, but they would welcome a reminder from patients, rather than not delivering on a key need.

I will be sure to pass on all your comments to the teams concerned.

Steve Sykes
