"Request for rehabilitation advice 12 wks after..."

About: East Riding Community Hospital

I visited the hospital today for a foot X-ray. Then I went to the Physiotherapy reception desk to ask if I was listed for any rehabilitation help as I has not seen anyone following heart surgery. The receptionist told me they could not help me without a referral and that getting angry would have no effect. I said I was not angry, but simply explaining my circumstances and why I was seeking their help, having been told before discharge that I would be visited and need a red button, a grab rail and a ramp. I was told I must see an Occupational Therapist and they were not accessible to the general public. I was sent to the general Reception area, and if an O.T. was on site I may be allowed to speak to them.

A member of O.T. staff was contacted and came immediately. They could not have been more helpful. They listened carefully to my circumstances, took notes and said I had slipped through the net. They were sorry I had needed to get my own grab rails etc when the department could have provided them for me. I explained that I have made good progress but need to know the best way forward to regain full fitness. I have been using a square walker provided by Castle Hill hospital to help me following my surgery as I also have a broken foot.

They felt that I probably just need some advice and Physiotherapy to further my recovery and said it was fine for me to self refer. I am now on the O.T. list. Eureka!! Thank you so much.
