"Great joined-up care"

About: Greater Manchester

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public. We have their details and will forward any comments to them, as they do not have an email address. They said…

I had been ill for a few days, aching & shivering and stayed in bed thinking I had flu. However my symptoms weren’t getting any easier, in fact I was feeling worse and had pain in my hip and groin. I rang my doctors (Hattersley Group Practice) at 8am. It took around 10 minutes to get through but got an appointment that morning with Dr Hershon. He examined me and thought it was either an infection in my testicle or a hernia – either way I needed an urgent scan. Just in case it was an infection the doctor gave me all the medication I would need to treat that. Before I got back home I got a phone call to ask could I go for an ultrasound scan in Oldham that evening.

After the scan it was confirmed that I had an infection. The next day Dr Hershon rang me to ask about the results. He confirmed that I was taking the medication and asked me to come and see him in a week. All in all fantastic joined-up care. Had I not been able to have a scan that day, I was going to be admitted to hospital, so saved money as well.

Healthwatch has received this response from the GP Practice. They don't have access to respond directly to Patient Opinion so have asked us post it on their behalf. We will also forward it on to the person who told us their story:

"Dear Sir

(which I believe to be correct given the description of your problem!)

I'm really pleased you got the help you deserved in a timely fashion. I also thanked my secretarial team on the day for getting the scan ordered so quickly.

Sorry you had to wait a few minutes for the phone to be answered; we are doing all we can to improve the 'patient experience', but there is rather large demand here in Hattersley.

If you feel you have any time to give, why not get involved in our Patient Participation Group? - I'd love to see you at our next meeting.

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to write; good news stories like yours do keep us going in these difficult times!

Best wishes

Dr Andy Hershon"
