"first baby"

About: St Peter's Hospital (Chertsey)

I was induced in February on my due date and generally found the hospital remarkably clean which was a relief. Even though the induction was painful at times, the staff were so kind and gentle.

The level of medical care was second to none and my baby was delivered under epidural successfully.

After I gave birth however I felt the care went down hill and I was rushed out of my delivery room very shortly after without much chance of recovering by a patronising head of department midwife.

I was then put on a ward which was so hot, when my Mum came to visit, she thought I looked like I had a temperature!

Opposite my bed there were young people visiting another new mum and they were talking so loud and swearing and treating the place like they were having a party.

I mentioned to a member of staff walking by who was working on the ward and they said they had been so busy they had not noticed, but that ward is a place for recovery and not a party and hearing profanities most of the time!

I was then after asking, put in a private room but that was awful! The radiator next to the bed was on full blast, it was boiling and none of the members of staff could turn it down. My partner ended up having to put a thick towel dressing gown over it to trap the heat.

And the room was right above the loud bin stores and trollies as another reviewer previously mentioned.

In the St peters reply, they said it was hot and the smell was due to the hot weather. What you don't realise is that it is not in the hot weather, it is in February and the room was boiling!

Another lady in the private room next to me also complained to reception about her room being boiling! And that boiling room cost £70 per night!

Please St peters for the future, fix your radiator system so it can actually be turned down or adjusted. Please give new mums the chance to sleep and maintain a less noisy environement.

I could not believe one of the cleaners I think speaking at the top of their voice down the corridor at someone else outside the ward at 10pm!

From a medical point of view, brilliant, my baby was so well looked after at the birth but after care needs to be worked on

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your first baby and thank you for your nice words about the high level of medical care you received and the kind nature of our staff. We have passed your comments onto the team.

However, we are very sorry to hear that your experience after the birth was not as good. We see your stay with us was back in February so hopefully some of these issues have now been resolved – but to make sure this is the case, we have passed your comments about the heat and being unable to control the temperatures of the radiators onto our estates and facilities team. As you rightly say, the issue of smells emanating from the external bins has been raised in another post, but again we hope this has improved since your stay as new bins with better lids have been installed.

We have also passed your comments about the visitors and ward environment onto our Lead Midwife to share with her team on Joan Booker. Naturally, visiting times can be busy with excited family members and friends coming to meet new babies. However, we completely agree that staff should be aware of the conduct of visitors and ensure that noise and disruption to other women and their babies is kept to a minimum.

Thank you for all of your feedback. If you would like to discuss your experiences in more detail then please contact Lead Midwife Debbie Parkinson on 01932 722392.
