"Left without support after CBT"

About: North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

I felt abandoned by assessment team after treatment I received from them has left me feeling distressed and having suicidal thoughts about something that happened to me when I was child.

They have told me that I am closed to them and I will not be able to tell anyone else because if they do not think it is important then no-one else will.

People should be warned that if they do CBT it might cause distress. I was just discharges you without support and just left me to cope with it on my own. It has been over a year and it will not go away and I cannot see how it can be resolved now. I do not think I would be able to trust anyone to speak about it again. I wish I had not told anyone in the first place.

I made a complaint but was disappointed with the process. Also, they told me that I could get help going to the Ombudsman from ICA but when I contacted them they told me they did not cover the Wigan area.

Hello freddie1

I am sorry to hear that you feel abandoned following your treatment. Unfortunately not everyone responds positively to the recommended treatment approaches but I understand that when treatment is completed we routinely offer help in accessing other support services and would be surprised to hear if this was not offered to you. If you would care to contact our PALS service directly we can look into this option on your behalf.

I do not accept that anyone seeking support from services would be advised that their problems were ‘not important’, or that they could ‘not tell anyone else’ about their issues. This is not only grossly inaccurate but is in direct conflict with the ethos of our Trust values. You are of course free to seek help elsewhere should you so wish and, if you can remember the name of the individual member of staff you spoke to, please contact our PALS department and we will investigate further as the Trust takes allegations of this type very seriously.

I am not sure who you spoke to with regard to pursuing your complaint via the Ombudsman but can assure you that this service is available to anyone in the Wigan Area and the details are as provided below …………...

You can contact the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman

Update posted by freddie1 (the patient)

I did not say that I was told the ombudsman service was not available to people in the Wigan area, I said I was told by 5bp that I could get help and support in taking my complaint to the Ombudsman from the ICA service but when I contacted them (the ICA) they told me their service was not available to people in the Wigan area. The 5bp should ensure information it gives people, especially concerning what is already a difficult process, is accurate and up to date.

I have never said I was told that my problems were "not important", or "I could not tell anyone else". That is deliberately misrepresentative. I have stated that the dismissive and uncaring response from members of 5bp staff, especially when I told them that the CBT was causing me a great deal of distress and to have suicidal thoughts concerning events in my childhood, indicates that they do not think it is important. Also, I did not say anyone at the 5bp said "I could not tell anyone else." I said that I do not feel able to tell anyone else because I am scared they will react in the same way. I think understanding and compassionate people would realise this.

I stand by the accusation that I have been abandoned without support for the distress caused by doing CBT and what happened in childhood. I have not been referred anywhere were I could get help with this and after the negative experiences I have had I do not think I would be able to do it anyway.

The response to my posting was inappropriate and upsetting.
