"I look back on my stay with fondness"

About: St James's University Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my daughter 4 weeks early and had already received good care from the maternity assessment unit due to a few scares during my pregnancy. The midwife on the antenatal ward was so kind and calm which really helped as I was scared about giving birth prematurely and what that might mean for the baby.

The main praise I wanted to give was to the staff on the transitional care unit where I spent 8 days with my new baby. They were so caring and compassionate, nothing was too much bother and they gave me such a great start to being a first time mum.

Each member of staff was professional but always very human, essential when you're dealing with emotional women immediately post birth! !

Although I was eager to get home, I look back on my time there with such fondness and a warm glow. They made what was a difficult time, much more manageable and I learnt so much from them. There was no rush for me to be discharged if I wasn't 100% happy and they all seemed genuinely pleased with the progress my baby had made. The nurses and other health care professionals work such long hours but I never once felt like I received anything other than their full attention.

The other staff on the ward including cleaners and hostesses were also very friendly and I can't speak highly enough of the food. What people can find to complain about, I'll never know! !

Dear Rosie791,

Thank you for taking the time out of what I am guessing is a very busy time for you with your new baby; I do hope that she is not giving you too many sleepless nights.

It has been wonderful to read your post.

I have passed your kind words onto the relevant matrons to pass onto their staff members who will be exceptionally pleased with the feedback you have given.

With kind regards

Rosie

Hi Rosie

You're more than welcome, I didn't expect a reply to my post so thank you for taking the time to respond. Our daughter is 8 months old now and touch wood a good sleeper!!

I'm a member of staff at the trust and it made me so proud to experience such lovely care. My mum who is a nurse was also really impressed with the staff and really appreciated the care and attention we were given.

Please do pass on my sincere thanks to all the staff on the transitional care ward, Emma (? Not sure of her job role) in particular showed unending patience and care in helping my daughter to start feeding properly. I know that morale isn't at its best in the NHS at the moment but these staff members should feel so proud of the work that they do and the impact they have even months later.

With kindest regards.
