"Waiting for gastroenterologist"

About: Victoria Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

After being admitted to the Victoria hospital last August with suspected appendicitis, I was given two ultrasounds and sent home after a three night stay. The pain has continued intermittently since then. I waited over 6 months to see a gastroenterologist through medinet (who Nhs Fife have now transferred my care to), and I am now waiting again for a MRI scan and review appointment. NHS Fife is clearly overstretched...why are there not more gastroenterologists and more follow through for patients instead of me having to chase up at every stage?

Dear S123

Thank you for telling us about your experience, which we recongise is not good. I took the opportunity to share your post with the Management Team who have advised me that there is currently a shortage of gastroenterologists nationally. In Fife we have two vacant posts currently, one of which is being covered by a locum doctor. It is for this reason we have sought the support of Medinet to help improve the situation.

I am sorry you have been left to chase things up at every stage and again this is not what we want for patients. Please get in contact with the Patient Relations team if you would like us to look into any of the specifics of your case.

Regards

Louise Ewing
