"Not impressed at out patients clinic"

About: Ayrshire Central Hospital

(as the patient),

My appointment at the out patient’s clinic did not go very well. The appointment was a check-up following a hospital admission earlier in the year when I had pneumonia.

Due to spinal injuries I wear a back support, when I was preparing for the examination I went to take off the support, but the doctor insisted I kept it on. I feel like there was no way he could have listened to my chest properly whilst I had the spinal support on.

I felt he had a terrible attitude, he asked whether I smoked, suggesting the pneumonia was related to this even though I have not smoked for many years and was not a heavy smoker back then. When I was admitted with pneumonia I was told that it was ‘community acquired’.

The doctor went on to ask whether I had ever had a pneumonia jab, my wife reminded me that I had had one a few years ago. The doctor said I should speak to my GP about getting another jab this year, there was no mention that he would contact my GP and recommend further pneumonia jabs.

I was not impressed.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Mask243,

Oh dear, not a good visit at all then. I am so sorry your consultation was not what you required. I can certainly pass this to the respiratory team for their consideration but if you would like to speak to someone about this, I can arrange a meeting or a phone call. Staff can sometimes be surprised by how they came over and it is really powerful when they do understand how you feel about your care. If you would like to speak to someone about this I could arrange this for you. You can email me on eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone me on 01563 826222 if you think it will be helpful. Pneumonia can be quite an ailment and I do hope you are fully recovered now.

Kind regards,

Eunice

Update posted by Mask243 (the patient)

Thank you for your reply,

I am unsure if pneumonia has cleared up as when I had it last year and had to be admitted, on discharge I was given an x ray at the first follow up appointment and another two follow up appointments and the doctors explained to me how the scarring had cleared up, at this appointment the doctor was not even aware of my spinal problems and looked as if he didn't believe me when I told him the diagnosis and prognosis after my last MRI and referred to my back brace as that plastic thing.

I visit the respiratory nurse soon as my inhalers were changed puffers as the doctor referred to them I believe as they were changed this is all he was interested in and discharging me without a proper examination despite me still being covered in shingles which appeared several days after leaving hospitals,I still don,t feel well and he did nothing to assure me I am, as well as making me feel I had done it to myself with smoking for a very short time many years ago and nothing to do with my job, despite conditions I worked in.

This is the second time I have had pneumonia in a year despite not being a smoker I hope you can appreciate my concern as the review after my first bout was much better as they showed me up to date X-ray and how it had improved unlike that hasty review I just had. I will seek the respiratory nurses advice and thank you for your response in this matter.

Yours sincerely Mask243

Dear Mask243,

Thank you for getting back to me. I am really sorry you are still feeling so unwell and clearly you are not as well as you would like to be. I am glad you have the respiratory nurse to help you but I am concerned about how you felt about your consultation. We really hope for better when we come to a clinic. I can still arrange for you to talk to one of the senior managers about that if you would like to do so.

Unfortunately I will be away from my desk for a week but if you do want me to arrange a chat, you can email me or call and leave a message and I will arrange a meeting for you on my return if you would like me to. You can email me at eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone me on 01563 826222.

I hope you are better soon,
Best wishes,
Eunice
