"Urgent out-of-hours ophthalmology appointment"

As a local Optometrist I am familiar with, and have had to share, many patients' frustration at making appointments with the ophthalmology unit. While appreciating their ever increasing workload, it was sad to see a once great department in some difficulty, and a reduction in old-fashioned manners and care.

So it was with some trepidation that I recently telephoned the department to ask for an urgent emergency appointment, only to find Switchboard was helpful, the nursing staff in the eye department friendly and an appointment willingly made for that evening. The patient was seen a few hours later, prescribed appropriate medication and given an emergency contact telephone number. This was needed the following day, with no trouble in reaching a friendly ear, when further advice was given.
