"Fantastic from start to not-quite-the-end"

About: Gloucestershire Royal Hospital

I was admitted via the Surgical Admissions Suite and it was very efficient, staff always on hand to answer queries and it all ran smoothly. I saw HCAs and Staff Nurse who were all friendly, caring, reassuring and helpful.

When I was taken to surgery, the team again were lovely and put me at ease, as it was my first time in a hospital. This included my anaethetist. The next I remember, I was in recovery being looked after then someone else took over and I must say they were fantastic. Unfortunately l was stuck in recovery for hours as the Day Surgery Unit weren't ready for me despite the nurse chasing them up every 15 minutes, and they kept me entertained as it was incredibly boring without a book etc.

Unfortunately this is where my positive experience ended. I can't comment a lot on the Day Surgery Unit staff as I barely saw any. One nurse came in when I arrived there at 7pm and said if I could manage a cup of tea, I could go home at 8.30pm. An hour later the tea arrived, but she then went off shift and I never saw her replacement. It was only when I got up and walked to find someone at 10.30pm to ask how much longer it would be, that they said they'd forgotten about me. I was then discharged quickly, without so much as a goodbye, but I shouldn't have had to go and ask them to check on me (it should be routine), I should have been discharged when they said I would be without me having to uncomfortably walk down and ask, and it would have been nice to have been offered a snack or something as I'd been fasting for a day by then. It's a real shame this last department let the hospital down, as all the staff before them were fantastic.
