What I liked

my 16 year old daughter had to go into pinderfields to have tonsills removed on monday. we had to sit for hours in arrivals then they took her to ward 7. It was full of mostly elderly men, which was very daunting for an already scared teenager. two women where later admitted to the same room as her. I went with her to theatre until she was asleep then was told to wait on the ward. My daughter came back very upset and in pain she told me shed been crying for me and they told her theyd gone to get me but i had gone, which distressed her more they hadnt come for me at all. she had only been on the ward 15 minutes when i was told i had to leave as visiting was over. i asked if i could stay as she was still in pain and upset and i was told no they couldnt make exceptions for one but she was the only child on this ward. I asked why she was on that ward instead of childrens and the nurse said she didnt know. I went back at evening visiting. When i got home she text me upset as shed been sick but felt the nurses werent bothered, she had been up all night sick but was eventually giving something to ease it. I phoned at 9 am to see if she was coming home and was told not until late afternoon i asked if i could go into see her and was told only at visiting at 2.30. my daughter finally text to say she could come home at 1.00pm but had been on her own upuntil then. This is totally disgraceful at a time when she was scared and in pain i was forced to be away from her. Surely something more suitable for teenagers should be arranged. in this country they are not adults until 18 so why should nhs be different. This has made a traumatic time a whole lot worse for both us

What could be improved

more understanding and better care for teenagers they are not adults but scared youngsters. Even teenage boys would need there mums at a time like this It is scary for an adult to have an operation never mind a child. I want to know why my daughter was put on this mostly male mixed adult ward and not childrens ward were i could of given her the care and support she needed. change definetly needs to be made it was bad enough one day it must be dreadful for the teenagers that are in longer.
