What I liked
I was attened to in A and E within 15 minutes of arrival. I had a chest x-ray, blood test and diagnosis of severe anaemia and pneumonia very quickly. I was told I would be admitted to a ward, treated with antibiotics and would need a blood transfusion. All the staff that attended to me were polite, caring, considerate and treated me with dignity at all times in A & E. I felt safe and secure. Once admitted to the ward, the following day I was seen by a consultant who ordered scans for my internal organs and offered me tests as an outpatient barium enema and a gastronomy to ascertain what had caused the anaemia.
What could be improved
My chest x-ray was displayed on a computer in the middle of A & E which could be seen from where I was in a cubicle and therefore assume from other cubicles as well. Once admitted to a ward, it then took several hours before I was given any blood, despite my blood count being as low as 6. I was in extreme pain and was not offered any pain killers for ages. The following day I was wheeled down for a scan and the person doing the scan just let my bed go back causing me extreme pain as at the time the only comfortable position for me with pneumonia was to sit up. As a reaction, I grabbed her wrist. She shook me off in no uncertain terms and said in a very acidic voice "don't touch me". I apologised and explained that I couldn't lie down as it was extremely painful. She just walked off. Someone else arrived and did the scan. 10 weeks on, I have had a follow up chest x-ray but received no results.
