"Continence care"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Continence Services

(as a relative),

My parent required incontinence care and when the nurse visited she left Tena pads and a pair of nylon/net pants to wear over these pads. My parent is in their ninetieth year and found these pads really difficult to use. We had wet bed, clothes and chairs for over a fortnight as he tried to use them. We contacted the service in Shotts and were advised that this was what was provided by their service. We purchased the Tena padded pants and my Dad was able to use these without any issue. When we again contacted the Continence service to ask if they could provide these we were again advised that the pad/pants were the only option available.

Could you let me know why the pants are not available as in this case the pad/pant option is not a workable option for my parent? We continue to buy the pants as this give my Dad a degree of dignity, as he is not dependant on someone helping him with this aspect of his personal care. In the circumstances I would like my Dad to be considered for the pants as the pad/pant combo is not 'fit for purpose'.

I look forward to your response in early course.

Dear Cobra1,

I’m sorry to read of the difficulties your dad experienced with the standard products provided by the Community Nursing Service.

As these products don’t appear to meet his particular needs we can arrange for your dad to be re-assessed by a Continence Nurse Specialist.

Please contact Allison Hilley, Team Leader Continence Service on 01236 71025601236 710256

Dear Cobra1

I’m glad you were able to get in touch to arrange for another assessment. I hope the Continence Team were able to supply you with appropriate alternative products and that your dad is more comfortable.

Your feedback has been used to highlight the need for good communication and closer working between the Community Nursing Service and the Continence Service.

As advised by yourself I contacted your team and had the pleasure of meeting and dealing with Julie. She met with my parent and her manner and care was exceptional. She was able to supply the correct products to meet my parent's needs. Thank you Julie
