"Bit late putting the review -but needs a proper..."

About: Medway Maritime Hospital

Was taken in on 30 June 2013. Had CT scan. Had to wait until the Monday for MRI scan because no staff were available (and these are expensive machines that should be operated 24 hours), On Monday had the scan, then later two consultants came to see me and told me my Brain tumour was inoperable, and to get my affairs in order. My only regret is not looking at my watch and asking "How long have I got?". Sent home. Fortunately someone with common sense contacted KCH London, and they took me in, operated on, on July11th and I am now fine. Disgusted with the "consultants", who should have said that it was inoperable at Medway, but that may case would be referred elsewhere. Was concerned that, in the ward I was in, there was red spots on the ceiling above my bed. Was this tomato soup or blood? Staff on the ward were very good however. Because I didn't know about this review place, your times for the visit doesn't go far enough into the past. But there are two other cases that will eventually find their way here with equally appalling treatment (missed operation, miss diagnoses, bad communication). But they are for another day, because they are on going.

We are really sorry that the care you received in our Emergency Department was not of the standard you would expect. As we do not have any information about your individual case it is difficult to investigate further. However, we have shared your concerns with our imaging and surgical departments so that action, if it is still appropriate, can be taken.

We have worked hard to improve the emergency department since 2013: - Children attending Medway Maritime Hospital for emergency treatment benefit from major improvements to the environment in which they are cared for and treated. The new layout provides complete separation from adult patients and gives the youngsters more privacy and dignity, which in turn is less stressful for them, their parents, relatives and carers.

- Following the successful opening of the Children's Emergency Department, the next phase of our planned investment programme to modernise and improve our Emergency Department is under way. Building work began on 2 March 2015 to transform the main reception and Minor Injuries department which is due to be completed early 2016.

Other changes we have made under our 18 month plan are: * New Frailty pathway, focused on assessing and treating elderly and frail patients more efficiently at the time they arrive; * New Clinical Decisions Unit which opened at the end of March 2015 to transfer short-term emergency patients to a ward-type observational setting.

If you would like to discuss your care in more detail, please do not hesitate to contact me, Ram Seesarun, Divisional Operations Manager for ED and Critical Care on 01634830000 x3047.
