About: Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital

This is the flagship Specialist Care A and E: be under no illusion, it's clean, staffed and geared up to treat critical cases. My husband made the mistake of using the NHS site to guide us to the nearest appropriate unit for a head injury. After an average wait, I was informed by the clearly bored triage nurse, after the most cursory of inspections, that I was in the wrong hospital and that this was a unit for serious cases such as those patients in cardiac arrest. I've rarely been treated with such contempt and found the incident distressing considering the injury. This hospital/staff member doesn't know exactly what patient type it's set up for: it's an open walk in A and E but doesn't want you to walk in through the doors unless you're critically unwell. Presumably then you wouldn't be able to walk in, need one on the 700 odd car parking spaces, A and E waiting room or as many staff.

Dear Madam, Many thanks for bringing this to our attention. The Northumbria is a brand new hospital designed with a very specific remit of treating serious medical emergencies, however that is no reason for you to walk away feeling dismissed and unwelcomed. I can only apologise - the behaviour you describe is unacceptable and not what we would expect from our staff. If you would like to email me directly at Annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk we would happily look into this in greater detail for you - I am prevented from doing anything else, other than sharing with the team , whilst your post remains anonymous. A head injury of any nature is unpleasant so info hope you are feeling a lot better now. With best wishes and apologies once again, Annie
