Absolutely appalled with the A&E staff. A young man attended the hospital, clearly distressed and experiencing negative symptoms of Mental Health Illness. He was seen in a cubicle close to me and the communication between him and the staff was clearly audible. The Senior Doctor had no time for him and sounded impatient and frankly uncaring. The young man presented at A&E for a physical health complaint, this was not assessed at any point. Security was called to remove the man from the premises due to his 'messing about'. The staff members then spent a short period of time discussing with each other outside the cubicles how this man was a time waster and obviously had nothing better to do on his Sunday night. The man was clearly experiencing thoughts of paranoia, delusions and flight of thought. His speech rate rapid and monotonous, and whilst in the waiting area previous to attending the cubicle had very obviously been responding to unseen stimuli. Not once did the staff in A&E consider contacting A&E liaison to have his mental health assessed. This treatment is unprofessional and I would of expected a much higher standard of care and respect, especially from Senior members of staff.
