"I was admitted to ward b1 on 25th ..."

About: Russells Hall Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

I was admitted to ward b1 on 25th June 2009 for hip re-surfacing from arriving and pre op and after op I was treat with upmost respect and dignity I cannot put anything into place that would make it better 1st class service. Arriving on Ward B1 I had very mixed feelings about the staff I felt there was an undercurrent among them, and some were very unfriendly and unhelpful.

What could be improved

One incident was when my urine back emptied on the floor I called for the nurse who I could see was annoyed she tutted and told me I had knocked it then went to get a sheet and chucked it down, i did inform her that i did not do this on purpose, but she ignored me I ended up in tears i was so embarassed and still she did not wipe it all up it was all under the leg rest when my partner came to visit he went and complained and someone cleared it up once again with a sheet as they could not get a mop from the cupboard.

I do believe that a lot of the nurses attititudes could be changed as people in hospital are very frightened and insecure and depending on these nurses specially the old, there is no communication with some of them they are just doing the job with no compassion or feeling, I was very pleased to get off that ward.

Anything else?

I would just like to say a big Thankyou to the Nurse who came in on the Sunday morning who to me was a good old fashioned nurse she was firm compassionate proffessional and this was my best day on the ward. She came in told us all what the procedure was for the day had us all washed Feet included, all sat up and we were served Lunch, then we all went down for what she called a power nap, while all this was being done she had our spirits up and made us laugh, she was a big girl (reminded me of Dawn French) and she made my first day out of bed a success Thankyou ,I know the other 3 in the ward felt the same, you done more for us all than you know her nursing skills were first class and if you find out who she is I would like my personal Thankyou to this Nurse to be passed on.

Many thanks for your positive comments regarding a care support worker. We have managed to identify her from your description and will pass your compliments on to her.

We are sorry about the concerns you have raised. Disposable mops are permanently available on every ward. The lead nurse will reinforce this to her staff. Poor attitudes of nursing staff are not acceptable and we are eager to fully investigate this matter. However, in order to do this we would require further details. Please feel free to contact either Matron Rutter on 01384 456111 ext. 2268 or Sister Plant on ext. 4692 who will discuss this further with you and maintain your anonymity. If you prefer, you could call our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 073 0510.
