"It's taken three years to get some closure"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Neurology Dirrans Centre

(as a service user),

I had a brain injury 3 years ago and I saw a neurologist for the first time last month.

I feel I fell through the cracks. I woke up in hospital after being attacked and was referred to a charity. I worked with Headway for 6 months, I had a lot of cognitive therapy, it was great.

It took me some time before I questioned why I hadn't seen anyone in the NHS. It was only through the Dirrans centre that I managed to sort out an appointment.

For three years I've been rattling my brain not understanding what was wrong, I needed information and answers. What is wrong? What can change? What can't change? What can I do to help? It was definitely worth going to the neurologist to get the information, to get some closure. I would have been able to move on quicker if I'd seen the neurologist after my injury as I understand I should have.

I think the issue is communication; there are too many departments with snippets of information and no one is collating it all to see the whole picture.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Ondo Eranza,

You have gone through the mill. I am sorry you have had such a long and difficult journey.

I think it is fair to say that sometimes we do not see the whole picture. I know there are some changes in the pipeline that should help with this e.g. our electronic systems will make ‘internal clinician to clinician referrals’ which were not previously as simple. In fairness, I can’t tell you at the moment why you did not see a Neurologist earlier but I can look into it for you if you would like me too. If you do want to contact me, you can email me at eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk or phone me on 01563 826222 and let me know your name and date of birth the team will be able to look into this further for you. I hope you do get the closure you need and you can move on.

Best wishes

Eunice
