About: Selly Oak Hospital (Acute)

(as the patient),

What I liked

In November 2008, I was taken to Selly Oak A&E dept with severe burns after being involved in an accident. After my first major operation, I ended up in the intensive care unit where I stayed for almost a week. During this time the staff there saved my life for which I am eternally grateful. I then spent a total of three months in the High Dependency Unit on the burns ward and I can honestly say that all of the staff were superb. Although it is not easy to spend Christmas in hospital, the staff made a concerted effort to make this a special time, including Christmas carols, presents and even fancy dress at New Year! I had numerous operations and grafts and I was looked after with care and expertise. The nurses gave me the encouragement to keep going and without their help and dedication I would not now be at home continuing to recover.

I would like to thank the consultants, theatre staff, dieticians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and especially all of the nurses who looked after me while I was at Selly Oak. Even the staff that cleaned my room and brought me my meals were fantastic and without their help, smiling faces and cheerful banter I would not have had the strength to carry on. My family were also looked after very well and were made welcome each time they visited.

I now go to the burns support group, which has also made a big difference and helped to put things into perspective since my accident. I still have to visit the out patients unit for various appointments and once more the staff there have looked after me really well. There are too many staff to name individually, however, I will always be grateful for all the help and care I received whilst I was at Selly Oak.
