"The excellent care delivered by the stroke unit"

About: West Suffolk Hospital

Following a massive stroke our wonderful 87 year old mum was admitted to the West Suffolk Stroke Unit. For five weeks she received constant excellent care and consideration by all the individual stroke management teams. As a family we were afforded the greatest respect and co-operation. In the event that our mother finally needed palliative care she was given privacy within the limits available on the ward at the time and as a family we were given open access to her bedside throughout her final week of life. The nurses showed kindness and care and above all respect to our mother as an individual, despite her being unable to respond through speech or movement. They always spoke directly to her, introducing themselves and explaining exactly what they were going to do before they did it. I would like to think that she understood what was happening and felt comfortable throughout despite the seriousness of her condition. Even after she passed away they continued to address her by her name and we appreciate everything each and every one of the nurses and doctors did to help her through this time.
