"Staff were kind, helpful and professional. ..."

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital (Birmingham)

(as the patient),

What I liked

Staff were kind, helpful and professional. The facilities were clean.

What could be improved

I was in a mixed sex, open plan surgical assesment unit for 36 hours before being transferred to a different ward. I had suffered a miscarrige and would have preffered an all female environment.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your experience at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. We welcome all feedback and would like to assure you that your comments will be taken seriously and acted upon as part of our ongoing commitment to improving patient experience.

With regards to the mixed sex accommodation we would like to apologise that you were in a situation that made you feel uncomfortable. This is an issue that we are aware of and we are working very hard to eliminate mixed sex wards. We have developed single sex areas in a number of departments and will continue to roll this out to other areas of the hospital as soon as possible. We have also introduced the use of portable privacy screens which have proved very effective. In the new hospital 44% of our inpatient beds are in single rooms, but we are doing everything we can in the meantime to make our patients feel comfortable in their surroundings.

If you would like further information or would like to discuss any of the points raised in more detail please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service who will be pleased to assist you. You can contact them by phone 0121 627 8820, by email PALS@uhb.nhs.uk , via the hospital website http://www.uhb.nhs.uk/Patients/Pals/Contact.aspx or in person by dropping in between 10am-4pm (Mon-Fri) to the PALS office located near the main entrance.
