"Poor hygiene at Scunthorpe Hospital"

About: Scunthorpe General Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as the patient),

I was recently a patient at Scunthorpe Hospital. The care I received from Consultants/Doctors and Nurses was second to none and I am extremely grateful.

But hygiene there has gone out of the window. The bathroom was in a terrible state - I had to clean the toilet every time I went in ( thank goodness for Parazone wipes, which I had been advised to take into hospital with me) also the bin hadn't been emptied for days and was overflowing. Where were the cleaners?

The cleansing hand gel at the bottom of my bed was empty ( I know because I had tried to use it) yet at least two people ( one a consultant and the other a nurse ) had pretended to cleanse their hands before they attended to me.

I know I should have said something at the time but being in a vulnerable state and being looked after by the people I was complaining about, I didn't.

While in hospital - two days after my operation, my husband brought me in a letter which had arrived at my home that morning from Scunthorpe Hospital. It stated that I should have a blood test one week before my admittance! What does that say about the admin staff?

One good thing - the food was quite good.

Hello, thank you for this feedback, which has been shared with the relevant managers. It's great to hear you felt very well looked after by the doctors and nurses.

The toilets are cleaned and checked on a regular basis but I'm sorry to hear the bin needed emptying. Please could I ask you to contact our patient advice and liaison team so they can take a few more details from you and look into this properly? They are contactable on nlg-tr.pals@nhs.net or 01724 290132.

Kind regards,

Sarah Mainprize

Update posted by Jay Ess (the patient)

The point I made about the bin needing emptying was secondary to the dirty state of the toilet. Never before have I heard of a patient having to clean the seat with wipes before using. The bathroom couldn't have been cleaned regularly. This was on a ward with mainly patients with gastric problems ( 28) and I would have thought hygiene should have been extremely important. I must say I was most upset by these findings and although I hate complaining I feel that these matters should be addressed. There were also other issues which I won't go into.
