"Long wait for orthodontic treatment"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery & Medicine

(as the patient),

I attended orthodontist appointment nearly 3 years ago to get initial consultation as my teeth are really crooked I was told I had clicky jaw that needed to be attended to I also went for X-rays.

My complaint is how long does it take to be seen again on a matter that causes me anxiety.

When I speak to my dentist he shrugs it off as says I won't be seen as its cosmetic I find this very unfair.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear micmc,

I am sorry you have not been able to get this treatment but without knowing more about you, it is not very easy to be 100% clear. To find out what the actual process is, we would need to know where your initial assessment was done (where they said about your clicking jaw). There are two routes to Orthodontic services and the process is different for each one.

Sadly, there is no guarantee that you will get dental treatment for crooked teeth. It depends on whether the Orthodontist deems the treatment is purely cosmetic or whether the treatment is needed for your oral health. They then have to refer your case to the Practitioner Services in Edinburgh and it is their decision to agree to the treatment or not. (If they say no, you can appeal).

If it was appropriate and you were referred to the hospital, I suspect you would need another referral and in that case, all the patients with medical issues would be priorities (I think).

I hope this helps.

Eunice

Update posted by micmc (the patient)

They spoke about my clicking jaw at the initial consultation at crosshouse hospital, and told me I would need to get mouth guard or something to try and fix it. I'm not asking for special treatment just to get some sort of response from initial appointment. I am saving hard to get work done privately as it effects my self confidence.
