"Appauling treatment"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

I can not rate the nursing staff in this department highly enough. Truly outstanding in their care and the amount of time and effort they took to treat me. They have been nothing but helpful and thoughtful, however the consultant I saw treated me appallingly. I was belittled in front of other staff and felt as though I was looked down upon. On my first appointment I was asked why I had bothered to get referred to them! I was then given 1 option regarding my treatment yet was not fully informed as to the consequences of the treatment. When I finally was made aware of the drawbacks at the actual appointment where the treatment was to take place I decided that this was something that needed more consideration before going ahead with. I was then to talked about in a demeaning fashion in front of me rather than being talked to in a courteous manner. I do realise that the consultant maybe had to deal with stress and tiredness and many other issues but I still fail to see how their treatment of me could be considered as acceptable. i suggest more people skills training in required. I feel so strongly about this that I now refuse to be seen by this consultant.

I am very sorry you had such a poor experience within the dermatology service. I apologise that the Consultant made you feel as they did. I agree there is no need for such discourteous behaviour. If you would like us to investigate this further please contact the Trust complaints team and we will be happy with your details. I am however very pleased to hear about how highly you rated the nursing staff. The staff in this team always try to make each patient feel as good as they can and offer as much time as possible to listen and care for their patients. I will pass on your comments to the Matron for dermatology so the staff are aware. Thank you for taking the time to contact the Trust and if we can help again please contact us.
