"I can't continue with this pain"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was referred back in April and am still awaiting an appointment.

I called today only to be told that I will be likely to get an appointment at the end of September/beginning of October!

I was referred by my GP as I have a cyst on my ovary which is causing me great discomfort and at times, excruciating pain. This has put pressure on my partner and I as I cannot have sex due to the pain which can put a strain on a marriage. I have made a complaint to the hospital but I'm not confident it will do anything.

I have also contacted my doctors surgery to see if it can be expedited by them. I can't continue with this pain all the time and given that I already suffer from depression and anxiety, this is making things worse.

There doesn't seem to be any light at the end of this long, dark tunnel.

Dear still waiting,

I am sorry that you are experiencing great discomfort and that you have had to wait beyond 12 weeks for an appointment. All referrals received are reviewed by a Consultant Gynaecologist and categorised into urgent or routine based on the referral information. The waiting time target for routine referrals is 12 weeks from date to referral to appointment. Unfortunately at the moment due to the service receiving a high number of referrals the waiting time has increased to around 20 weeks. We are currently reviewing all available clinics and will be running additional clinics to cope with the demand. As you will understand I cannot comment on individual cases but the complaint that you have made will. In the meantime may I suggest that if your symptoms have worsened since referral that you go back to your GP for advice.

Kind regards

Caroline
