I recently had treatment in the theatre admissions unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, the staff were really nice, they explained everything to me that would happen, and really put me at ease. When it came to the recovery phase, they said that I'd have to eat before I left. I explained that I had coeliac, which they didn't know, and as I'm very sensitive i have to be extremely careful, they said they had some gluten free bread but no where to toast it, so it would have to be bread and butter or your family could bring something in. I was taken to a ward to recover, as they weren't sure if I would be going home, they asked if I wanted a sandwich I explained again that I had coeliac, which again they didn't know, they said the kitchen was still open so they would send down for one. I was still there when the night time drinks came round and they offered me a choice between a sandwich and a buiscit, I asked if they were gluten free they said no, I explained to them that I couldn't eat them, they answered by saying oh, you can't have anything then, just a drink. I understand that staff are busy, I used to be a support worker in a surgical hospital so have a very good idea of how things are, but I just wondered if the staff actually read the notes they are given, as it says clearly that I have coeliac and would require a different diet. The staff on the ward had been told that I would be staying overnight, so surly provisions should have been made. A nurse kindly point out they did cereal and toast for breakfast, but I couldn't eat any of them. So what exactly were I suppose to eat if I had stayed? Also why was my family expected to take me food in? They don't say that to diabetics or people that have a fairly normal diet. Luckily for me I was discharged at 9pm.
