"A&E and Cromie Ward"

About: Torbay Hospital

I went to A&E today referred by my GP with suspected appendicitis. I was seen quickly, everyone was friendly and knowledgeable and they kept me well informed all of the time, apologising for delays. I didn't like that I had to be wheeled on a bed to and from x-ray when I was physically fine but I guess it's better to be safe. I was then transferred to a ward due to delays with my test results which seemed like extra work for everyone concerned when I was happy to wait in a waiting room but it was nice to be given extra treatment and necessary in case I did have to stay overnight. Everything was really clean and again staff were friendly but not so well linked as in A&E. While one member of staff was showing me to my bed another stopped me and asked where I was going and who I was. Then one person said no food or drink, the next one came with a jug of water and said to drink plenty to not get dehydrated, very confusing. I was asked to give a urine sample but told to leave it in the toilet which I didn't like doing. Then when I left I was given a discharge pack with a lot of paperwork not relevant to me and worried about the cost of this? I had leaflets on pressure ulcers, cannulas, blood clots and advice about getting over surgery but I'd only been on the ward for around an hour and a half and my condition and treatment didn't relate to any of those things. My overall experience was great and a lot better than expected, I can't fault the staff who were all friendly and clear but things can easily be changed from an admin point of view here to be more efficient and reduce costs/material waste.

Dear Patient,

Thank you for taking the time to comment.

It is always good to receive feedback; we try to ensure we share examples of good practice and also that we learn from any negative experiences.

Kind regards
